Time Marches OnAnd here we are, a week later. I have an art/craft show to attend at work this Friday. I have been busy since mid Saturday with felt, cutting, measuring, magnets, and display. I hope I can pull something off. I'm at the point now where I need to print pen & ink art. Yikes!! My friends and co-workers do not need to be bogged down with a lot of content. What I want for them is to share my ideas for cool customizable interactive work space. I would not be where I am today without the playfulness of design that has infiltrated my life. Everything is about design and placement!, care and whim, Free + Form = Art. I have been touched by the return to felt. Just blond, black and gray this time. The blond is gorgeous, soft and forgiving. The black is effective, and the gray has a wonderful steadfast texture. Who could deny the fun mix of pool hall and kindergarten that felt provides. It is a great intermediary between cubicle material and paper,-- not too expensive and not too cheap. It is not found on walls at home, so it can be specific to the workplace. And it can bridge the divide between corporate design and employee working/personal space. So,... I am doing some repetition. It's not so fun with the time pressure, but I think when it is routine it will be okay, refilling my inventory. Listen to Time Keeps on Slipping, or the News. Something to keep the hands busy and maintain movement while I let my mind wander to next steps. Have I mentioned that I love the Bridge on XM? The songs of the 60s/70s have shaped my dreams. Okay,... so time to get back to work on the Modern Art for the Cubicle concept. How is it related to my blog's purpose to illustrate a mission against Cancer? It is a loose one, but here goes. I see cancer as a rebellion at the cellular level in the face of complacency. It may be a personal complacency of bad habits, or a global complacency of bad environments. I have seen amazingly health conscious people, and wonderfully driven people, fall sway to cancer's influence, so it's complex. But to fight the root, I say start with peace and passion. Where there is peace and passion, there is a powerful deflector against the chaotic energy that fuels cancer. Cubicle space in general lacks a few things. Foremost is shared purpose. Traditional framed artwork can look silly on cubicle walls. Undeveloped themes are present -- either a devotion to tools from the job, a smorgasborg of personal pursuits (star wars figures for the software programmer), or family photos galore. Mixed feelings decorate the space in an exposed way. What is needed:
And flexibility. We need spaces that can grow and contract with our moods. Perhaps we feel seasonal this year and want to go all out, or perhaps we're skittish about the job and want to retract a bit. Good design should allow for that, a seamless transition. Okay,... so time to get busy? It's Tuesday today. I'll work on some paper blanks and start on labeling with the normal printer this evening. I can start playing with the fancy printer in the morning (I'm so scared of it and don't understand why). In any case, thank you for following my writing. Wish me luck!
